Chemistry connects mathematics and physical principles to properties of atoms and molecules, and employs this molecular-level understanding to rationalize the behavior of biological systems, the environment, and materials. Biochemistry, foundational to the practice of modern medicine, develops understanding of biology at the scale of atoms to molecules. At this webinar, you will meet some of the Chemistry and Biochemistry instructors who will be teaching classes and you will also have the chance to hear from current students and alumni. Learn about the skills you gain with your laboratory training, where you will translate classroom concepts into hands-on, instrument-supported understanding at the scale of atoms to molecules, including performing experiments to characterize protein structure and function, cloning DNA, working with bacterial cell culture, and measuring how molecules interact with light and magnetic fields to probe their properties. These majors lead to many career paths and can be challenging, but we will tell you about the resources we have at UC Merced to help you succeed - with peer learning assistants inside and outside of classrooms, peer mentors to help you navigate the major and the campus, clubs to connect you to careers and others chemists and biochemists, and research you can do to take your leaning to the next level.
